Expanding Storage in the Mini FUN 11: A Practical Guide
The Mini FUN 11, Geekom’s latest mini-PC powered by an Intel Core i9-11900KB, comes standard with a 1TB SSD. For gamers, this storage may seem insufficient, as today’s large game files often run into hundreds of gigabytes. Unlike many of Geekom’s mini-PCs, accessing the SSD slot in the Mini FUN 11 requires a bit more technical know-how and disassembly. Geekom has based the Mini FUN 11 on Intel’s Compute Element, which needs to be removed to add more storage. Here, we’ll break down the steps needed to access and upgrade the SSD in the Mini FUN 11.
Step 1: Removing the Outer Shell
The first step is removing the computer’s top panel, which comes off relatively easily and can later be replaced just as effortlessly. Once the top is removed, you’ll have access to the side panels. Though the glass side panel offers a good view of the internal components, removing it will make the disassembly process even easier.
Step 2: Opening the Back Panel
With the top and sides off, the back panel can also be detached, providing full access to the Mini FUN 11’s internals.
Step 3: Disconnecting Components
Before accessing the Compute Element, you’ll need to remove the Wi-Fi antennas to ensure a clear path to the module. These antennas are mounted and can be detached safely. After that, the single screw holding the Compute Element in place can be unscrewed, allowing the module to be removed. To avoid damaging any cables, unplug them carefully before removing the module.
Step 4: Accessing the Compute Element
The Compute Element is marked with a distinctive skull logo on the Extreme version, a detail some might find superfluous. The module itself requires further disassembly. Thankfully, the screws are held firmly in place, so there’s no risk of losing them. Lifting the top of the Compute Element reveals the internal components, including the pre-installed Lexar 620 SSD.
Step 5: Adding Another SSD
The Mini FUN 11’s motherboard offers space for an additional SSD, complete with pre-installed screws to secure a new drive. To install, simply unscrew the placeholder, insert the new SSD, and re-secure it.
Step 6: Reassembly
Once the new SSD is secured, close the Compute Element and place it back in the Mini FUN 11. Reverse the earlier steps, reattaching all panels and ensuring the Wi-Fi antennas are properly connected. When the top panel is back in place, your Mini FUN 11 is ready for use, complete with expanded storage capacity.
Final Thoughts
Expanding storage on the Mini FUN 11 isn’t as straightforward as it might be on other mini-PCs, but with patience and attention to detail, it’s achievable. Once complete, you’ll have a powerful mini-PC with room for a larger game library and other storage-heavy tasks, making the Mini FUN 11 a versatile choice for both gaming and productivity.
