The expectant mother, May Tagu, was filmed by the Planckendael Zoo in Belgium, lightly kicking the amniotic sac hanging out of her birth canal. After a day in labour, the sac dropped out, breaking and releasing the calf and a lot of fluid. The mother, and her family's protective instincts come in as they rushed to protect the calf, rubbing dirt on it as to ward off predators who may otherwise smell the newborn. The baby elephant then woke uo, savvy enough to try and stand up by itself, and take shelter under an adult elephant, where it was welcomed by the family.
