Cells were discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665.
Living cells were discovered by van Leeuwenhoek in 1674.
Schleiden (1838) and Schwann (1839) theorized that cells are the basic building blocks of all living things.
In 1855 Rudolf Virchow found cells arise from pre-existing cells.
Based on the theories proposed by Schleiden and Schwann and then by Rudolf Virchow the modern cell theory emerged as
1. All living organisms are composed of one or more cells.
2. The cell is the basic unit of structure and organization in organisms.
3. Cells arise from pre-existing cells.
