Sukhdev Thapar (1907-1931) was a key figure in the Indian independence movement against British colonial rule. Born in Punjab, India, he became an active participant in the struggle for India's freedom from a young age.
Sukhdev was a close associate of Bhagat Singh and Shivaram Rajguru, forming a core part of their revolutionary group. He was involved in various acts of protest against British rule, advocating for complete independence for India. One of the most notable incidents was the assassination of British police officer James Saunders, a response to the brutal lathi charge on Lala Lajpat Rai during a protest.
Together with Bhagat Singh and Rajguru, Sukhdev was arrested for their revolutionary activities and involvement in the Saunders assassination. Following a high-profile trial, they were sentenced to death. Despite the grim circumstances, Sukhdev remained steadfast in his commitment to the cause of Indian independence.
On March 23, 1931, Sukhdev Thapar, along with Bhagat Singh and Shivaram Rajguru, was hanged by the British authorities. Their sacrifice ignited a wave of patriotism and resistance across India, catalyzing the nation's fight for freedom. Sukhdev Thapar's unwavering dedication to the struggle and his ultimate sacrifice continue to inspire generations of Indians in their pursuit of a free and sovereign nation.
