A few weeks ago, Design to Connect had the opportunity to discuss placemaking, community building, and fostering a sense of belonging in cities with Hans Karssenberg, the partner, public developer, and founder of Stipo, based in Amsterdam.
.
Hans loves great places where people can meet. He is devoted to human scale, mingled, multi-layered cities, great public space, involved communities, and true sustainability.
With his team STIPO, they want to be involved in the long term in developing the city, sharing knowledge and training courses. He loves working with people of all kinds, interests, and disciplines, creative and surprising processes, and thinking and acting short and long-term.
He works on human-scale area development, transformation, placemaking, the city at eye level, organic methods, inclusive regeneration, the creative economy, social innovation, co-creation, community development, user-based streets, squares and parks, the civic economy, co-created visions and strategies, system change.
Their multidisciplinary team for urban development, STIPO, stands for Strategic and Innovative Product development in an Open source environment. They innovate by sharing, work open source, and are based in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Athens, and Milan.
He likes to work both on a local, city, and regional level and is involved in international exchange. He is a board member for several foundations, such as Placemaking Europe and Stichting Stadmakersfonds.
