In 1995 Michael Jordan had left the NBA to swing at baseballs. In his absence Hakeem Olajuwon took over the league. However, David Robinson was named MVP and Hakeem was placed 5th in voting behind Shaq, Karl Malone and Patrick Ewing. Hakeem took the disrespect personally.
