Introduced in 2010 by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the Volkswagen Amarok is a robust pickup truck known for its body-on-frame design, featuring a double-wishbone suspension at the front and leaf springs at the rear. The Amarok lineup offers versatility with single cab and double cab options, allowing customers to choose between rear-wheel drive and 4motion four-wheel-drive configurations. Its powertrains include turbocharged petrol or turbocharged direct injection (TDI) diesel engines.
Competing globally, the Amarok faces formidable rivals such as the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi L200, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, and Chevrolet/Holden Colorado/S-10. The second-generation Amarok builds upon the strong foundation of the Ford Ranger.
With the second generation, customers can select from four turbo-diesel (TDI) engines and one turbocharged petrol (TSI) engine. In certain African markets, the base variant features a 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI engine delivering 110 kW (150 PS; 148 hp). This engine is also available in higher tunes, producing 125 kW (170 PS; 168 hp), and with a twin-turbo variant generating either 150 kW (204 PS; 201 hp) or 154 kW (209 PS; 207 hp) depending on the market. For those seeking top-tier performance, there's the option of a 3.0-liter Ford-Jaguar Land Rover-developed AJD-V6 engine, offering power outputs of 177 kW (241 PS; 237 hp) or 184 kW (250 PS; 247 hp) depending on the market. In markets preferring petrol power, a single 2.3-liter turbocharged petrol engine delivering 222 kW (302 PS; 298 hp) is available.
The 154 kW (209 PS; 207 hp) Amarok diesel variant comes standard with a 10-speed automatic gearbox paired with an e-shifter (shift-by-wire). Other engine options offer a choice between a 6-speed automatic transmission and 5- or 6-speed manual gearboxes.
