A military court in Italy on Thursday (1/8) acquitted former Nazi SS officer Erich Priebke, 83, of war crimes charges stemming from his involvement in the massacre of 335 Italians in 1944 during the Nazi German occupation of Rome. The court found him guilty of taking part in the killings, but cleared him of acting with cruelty and premeditation because he was only following orders, as the defence had argued during the three-month trial. Families of some of the victims shouted "fascist, fascist" upon hearing the verdict in the hallway outside the courtroom, which was closed to the public.
