Milwaukee is grappling with a years-long uptick in gun violence, with the city's homicide rate reaching a record high in 2022. The city recorded 195 homicides in 2022, up from 177 in 2021 and 131 in 2020.

The uptick in gun violence has been concentrated in Milwaukee's poorest neighborhoods, where the homicide rate is more than twice the national average. In 2022, 77% of Milwaukee's homicide victims were black, and 62% were male.
Community leaders and activists say the gun violence crisis is a "slow-motion mass murder" that is devastating Milwaukee's communities. They point to a number of factors that contribute to the problem, including poverty, lack of opportunity, and easy access to guns.
