This is an expressive discussion on how we can thoughtfully connect with nature and each other through the removal and upcycling of invasive species. Many harmful, non-native species have infiltrated our versions of nature without our knowing. We can recreate our perceptions by understanding that invasive species can be utilized to create products that can help people all over the world. Wren Vogel is pursuing a graduate degree in Sustainability Studies and has developed vast knowledge on invasive aquatic biota, sanitation and gender, womxn’s mobility, and the human-environment relationship. Through connections with likeminded organizations, Wren has aided in the removal of over 500lbs of invasive aquatic species from Texas rivers. With a passion for gender equity, sanitation security, and ecological stability, Wren is developing recommendations to fabricate a compostable menstrual pad and superabsorbent polymers using the prolific invasive species, the water hyacinth. Wren has been featured on Texas State’s Sustainability Spotlight and are recognized within the community for the work they do to promote river health and equality.
