Thank you for choosing W.B. Jones as your spring resource. In this video, we will be covering how to measure extension springs tools we recommend you have before you start are a micrometer which should be used whenever possible. Calipers and a ruler or tape measure for large springs. In this video, we will be using this extension spring to show the steps clearly.
First, we want to measure the wire diameter. Common practice is to measure the wire in two different spots and take the average for this spring. The wire diameter is .092 inches. Next will measure outside diameter, commonly referred to as odd. For this spring it is 0.867 inches. You'll see on our online form an option for inside diameter or ID.
As with most springs, the inside diameter is typically hard to measure accurately. So use the outside diameter whenever possible. Then we'll measure the body length. The body is considered the coiled portion. It does not include the hooks or loops for this spring. We'll use a ruler, but for smaller springs, the caliper or micrometer is the best option. This spring is 4.75 inches.
You can also provide the number of coils when using our online form. Remember to count each full rotation. Lastly, we will measure the overall length. This is the length over the top of each end or outside the outside. The overall length of this spring is six inches. Now you will have all the information required to measure your extension spring accurately.
Thank you for watching our video. And if you find yourself holding a spring like this or something not easily measurable or describable, we have members on staff who are always here to help.
