The sound of “add9” can be one of those dreamy sound effects on the guitar that quickly takes a riff from sounding basic to advanced sophistication.

It works simply by using all of the notes from the “Major 7” or “Minor 7” chord and then adding the second note away from the chords root (included up an octave). The result is a compound interval effect that sounds amazing - even magical - especially when played on an acoustic guitar.

When you’re after that magical “cloud 9” sound there’s a chord called “add9” that can be your best friend. This lesson gets you ready to do some “add9” riffs by giving full coverage of the arpeggio across the first half of the neck.

To help bring you into full awareness with the notes of “add9,” the lesson will start with a breakdown of notes in the low neck region. To successfully apply this note workout you will need access the tones across the neck in two parts. Over time, you will be able to use all the notes more freely to build riffs.

Once you become familiar with all the tones across the neck region that is shown, immediately start organizing them into chord patterns for constructing original guitar riffs.

Even though the notes and harmony can seem somewhat limited, keep your focus on inventing chord moves that you enjoy. Over time, at some point, you’ll connect the chords exactly into cool riffs that work great.
