I’m in the process of prepping for a wild camping series. I find myself moving away from conventional car camping and more into the rough stuff out in the wild. I love the freedom and the challenges that come with it. It’s definitely something I’ve become very interested in of late.
In this video I spent two nights out on a farm in the Clanwilliam area. The first night was in the tent and the second was up on a mountain ridge under the stars. The bonus was that I was away from people and utterly on my own. I also left my usual cook set at home, bringing only a titanium pot, a spork and a ferro rod to make fire and cook. It felt raw and I loved it. On day two, I had to pack up into the mountains and find a suitable spot for the night. I was lucky to find a spot on a ridge, flat, secure and with a hell of a view. There was a baboon troop pretty close by but they didn’t interfere with me at all. The only down side was the wind. It was relentless. During the night I ended up with my woollen blanket wrapped around my head just to get some relief from the swirling gusts. The stars were incredible with numerous satellites wizzing by. Besides the wind it was an incredible experience. This is something I want to get more into.
The next morning I was woken by the sounds of my baboon friends and a dramatic sunrise bouncing off the mountains. The hike down was a lot easier and soon I was back at the car only to find myself thinking about my next adventure all the way home. Although I refer to this as wild camping “prep” it’s pretty much as wild as it gets I think. The only difference is that I was still on someone else’s property and not out in the middle of absolutely nowhere. Either way it was great and I’m already planning the next one. Until then..
