On this day August 27, 1981, which was a Thursday, Genesis appeared on the BBC Program, Top of the Pops. (TOTP) The band performed (keep in mind all Top of the Pops was to track) the song Abacab.

A few things to note:
1) They are not playing live, they are playing to the recorded version of the song, per TOTP protocol. For sure the guys did not favor having to do this.
2) Phil is off the vocals lip-sync on the beginning of the second verse. "If you're wrappin'..." bit.
3) We hardly ever see Phil 'singing' (technically he is not singing live) from behind the kit. This video for this song we do see this as well. He spoke about this general topic in many interviews. Physically is was no problem for him to sing live while drumming during a show. But, his decision--upon accepting the post as front man -- was that the audience interaction was key--and that the drum kit being a natural barrier, would get in the way of the connection with the audience...
4) Speaking of the drum kit. It's a beautiful honey color isn't it!?
