Many mothers have a doubt if their milk is sufficient for her baby and they are always in a hurry to start some extra milk or formula milk. Adequate lactation can be assessed in three ways, the most important being weight gain which starts in the baby after the first week is completed.
The second being what we call the presence of drip milk in the mother, i.e. when she is feeding from one breast, the presence of milk dripping from the other breast indicates that there is adequate lactation.
Mother may also feel heaviness in the breast if a baby does not take a feed for 2 or 3 hours
These signs do indicate that the milk production is adequate, mother should never go by crying in the baby, as babies may cry for various reasons, can be a wet nappy or just that they want to be picked up or to be close to the mother which always does not necessarily mean hunger.
