Turner Describes Some of the Most Common Gear-Related Accidents
Tom Turner, Manager of Technical Services for the American Bonanza Society and leading instructor for FlightSafety, Bonanzas international pilot training program, has dedicated significant effort to understanding what factors lead to simple, but dangerous piloting mistakes. As a Master CFI and renown safety expert, Tom Turner holds a Masters Degree in Aviation Safety.
Each week, Turner writes FLYING LESSONS, a free weekly e-newsletter available online at his website or sent directly to subscribers. Using the past weeks aircraft mishap reports, Turner reflects upon various circumstances that might have contributed to such accidents.
One of the most common subjects that Turner discusses is landing gear-related mishaps. According to data gathered between September of 2004 and December of 2006, approximately 45% of all reported incidents for piston-engine retractable gear aircraft were gear related. There are three types of gear-related mishaps: gear up, gear collapse, and mechanical failure. Join Aero-TV as Turner describes how pilots can take preventative measures to avoid these common, yet often preventable accidents.
