"The Samoa Island of Apolima was to a large extent a natural fortress. It is in fact an extinct volcano crater with steep inaccessible sides; but in one place the cup has been broken away, sa as to form a difficult and dangerous opening. The people use to stretch a rope across the narrow opening; and this was drawn tigh o,n an enmy canoe attemting to enter, its occupiers being capsized into the water, and thus easily disposed of. The interior basin was well watered and most prolific."
