The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington announced Thursday that more than $2.3 million in federal funding was being sent to the Spokane Police Department and Spokane County to fight crime.
$500,000 of the funding would go toward improving the criminal justice system, preventing and combatting teen delinquency and helping victims of crime, county-wide.
Two grants totaling $1,817,000 through the Byrne Discretionary Community Project Funding/Byrne Discretionary Grants Program were awarded to the Spokane Police Department. U.S. Attorney Vanessa R. Waldref said there are a lot of goals in mind for this funding, including:
- purchasing new aircraft for the Spokane Regional Air Support Unit (SRASU)
- improving technology to increase staff
- improve outcomes for crime victims
- replace old technology
- increase officer safety
- increase resources, including treatment, to address domestic violence
“It is critical that we work together – with our federal, state, and local partners to keep our communities safe and strong. The citizens of Spokane County deserve nothing less.” U.S. Attorney Waldref said. She continued, “These latest grant awards demonstrate the federal government’s continued commitment to ensuring the justice system is keeping up with technological advances, while maintaining the overall goal of decreasing crime and supporting those who fall victim to it. Right here in Eastern Washington, these funds fall in line with my Office’s Safe Home Safe Community Initiative, which focuses on curbing gun violence by removing firearms unlawfully possessed by individuals with a track record of violent crime and domestic violence – these efforts protect victims, law enforcement, and the entire community.”
KXLY contacted the Spokane Police Department for comment on the grant announcements and is waiting for a response.
