Violist Marina Thibeault, born in Québec city, began her musical studies at the age of six under the guidance of her elderly-fiddler-neighbour. At 9 years old, she was the youngest violin student to enter the Conservatoire de Musique de Québec. Through her studies with professors Michael Tree and Roberto Diaz at the Curtis Institute of Music. In order to deepen her studies, she attended the Conservatorio della Svizzera italiana under the tutelage of Bruno Giuranna, with the help of the Canada’s Council of the Arts and the Eskas Scholarship. Marina has recently completed her Master’s degree with André Roy at the McGill University. Further guidance include master classes with Maxim Rysanov, Thomas Riebl, Lars Anders Tomter, Vladimir Mendelssohn and Gérard Caussé. Marina has participated in numerous music festivals.
At 17, she was the youngest principal viola for the New York String Orchestra Seminar. She has also attended the Music Academy of the West, the Perlman Chamber Music workshop, Taos School of Music, Aurora Master classes, MISQA and IMS Prussia Cove. Active in the chamber music scene, she has collaborated with members of the Guarneri Quartet, the Cleveland Quartet, the London Haydn Quartet, Matt Haimovitz, Martin Beaver and Steven Dann. Her interest in new music has led her to work with living composers such as John Corigliano, Joan Tower and Krzysztof Penderecki.
Marina was a 2007 winner of “CBC Young Artist”, She was also a 2008 prize-winner at Hradec’s Beethoven International Music Competition in the Czech Republic, after which she gave a recital tour in Prague and Teplice, during the Music Festival Ludwig van Beethoven. In November 2014, Marina toured as an Emerging Artist under the management of Les Jeunesses Musicales du Canada around Quebec and Ontario with an all eastern european recital: White Nights in Russia.
In 2015, she wins both the first prize in the string category of Prix d’Europe and the McGill Concerto Competition. Marina will perform the Schnittke Concerto with MGSO in February 2016. She will also appear as a soloist with the Santiago Symphony and in recitals in Chile in June 2016 and on tour for Atlantic Debut in Septembre 2016 with Trio Canoe.
Marina is also a Hatha Yoga teacher. Former teacher at the Sivananda Yoga Center in Montreal, she carries on giving workshops and conferences on yoga for musicians.
