✍ The lie that The Thing (1982) is a remake of The Thing from Another World (1952) has been repeated so many times that for many people it is already an unquestionable fact. John Carpenter's The Thing is the re-adaptation of the story Who Goes There?, written by John W. Campbell and published in the magazine Astounding Stories in 1938.

Producers David Foster and Lawrence Turman suggested to Universal Pictures a re-adaptation of the story that would be much more faithful to the story than Christian NyBy's film.
Unlike Nyby's adaptation, Carpenter's version is much closer to the original story, the filmmaker himself confirms this in interviews on the Blu-ray: "The James Arness monster was more like a Frankenstein creature, he wasn't the creature that could imitate any life-form from the original story. The John W. Campbell story "Who goes there?" is basically an Agatha Christie kind of, Ten Little Indian. This creature is in your midst and he's imitating eather one or all of us. Who's human and who isn't? That kind of an idea really fascinanted me. 'Let's go back to the short story and explore it'. I thought it has never been really told."

The 1952 classic does not include the short story's original characters, a creature with the ability to mimic living organisms, the whodunit or many of the scenes shown in this video. It doesn't even take place at the South Pole.

The video compares a handful of scenes from Carpenter's film with the original texts of Campbell's story, as a small example of the resemblance between the two works.
