The toilet bowl could be described as the unsung hero of the home. Seldom does it get much fanfare, yet day in and day out it provides a vital service to just about every household. And while toilets are extremely durable and can last a lifetime, they do require a certain amount of upkeep, in particular those unsightly stains that arrive as a result of hard water or due to the presence of calcium or lime in your water supply. In this Fix-It in 15:00 video, Lou walks us through why these stains occur and more importantly how to deal with them.

Before you get to work on removing stains in your toilet, you need to have the right supplies. One great aid is something called Bar Keepers Friend. What is Barkeepers Friend, you may ask? Well, it’s a tried and true cleansing agent that uses natural acids. It can be used on a number of different surfaces such as stainless steel, glass, and ceramics which makes it great for porcelain toilet applications.

Also, if you prefer you can wear rubber gloves to keep your hands dry, but remember the stains are created by the water that emanates from the tank and not necessarily the bowl.

Sprinkle the cleansing agent around the bowl and with some pressure, take a scrubbing pad and work the Bar Keepers Friend into the surface. You also want to scrub under the rim since this is where the water actually flows into the bowl when flushing and likely where most of the deposits have built up.

Now that you’ve removed the stains, let’s focus on how to prevent them from happening down the line. You see, the stains are created by water that sits in the tank, so when you have hard water or water that has a high calcium or lime count, you’re going to want to add a calcium, lime and rust remover to the water that sits in the tank.
