Application of VSEPR theory to molecules whose central atoms have five, six, or seven electron pairs - those that "expand the octet". The molecules described include phosphorus pentafluoride, sulfur tetrafluoride, iodine trichloride, triiodide anion, sulfur hexafluoride, iodine pentachloride, iodine tetrachloride anion, and iodine tetrachloride. The molecular geometries include trigonal bipyramidal, "see saw", T-shaped, linear, octahedral, square pyramidal, square planar, and pentagonal bipyramidal. The hybridizations on the central atoms demonstrated are dsp³, d²sp³, and d³sp³.
