Anyone of my generation who grew up in the deep south, as I did, remembers a time when the scourge of segregation was both the practice and the law. And while our society is not perfect today, we are at least far enough along that young people find it hard to believe the terrible things that happened in those times.
That’s why as we continue to build a new south that respects all people, it is important we also not forget the lessons of the past. One organization doing that is the new National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery. The memorial will not be a happy place, but it will tell stories that should never be forgotten. The founders believe that publicly confronting the truth about our history is the first step towards recovery and reconciliation. Those are worthy goals.
The memorial opens April 26th in Montgomery. A link to their web site is on WVTM 13.com
