After the catastrophic crises of the third century, the fourth century is an era of recovery and reform under great emperors like Diocletian, Constantine and Theodosius. Under their rule the Roman empire underwent a major overhaul, including the army. For example, many new legions were raised, but much more revolutionary was the new system of 'classes', divided into palatini, comitatenses and limitanei. What were these? What was the difference between them? Was one better than the other? How did they impact the overall strategy of the late Roman army? Find out in this video!
