🖋️👩🔬Our researcher Letícia Lima has gathered signatures from more than 70 Brazilian scientists supporting an urgent call to address the extreme drought currently ravaging the central Amazon.
Recent reports of fish and fresh-water dolphins washing up on the shores of rivers and lakes have alarmed researchers who have long-warned about the threat of increasing drought to communities in the Amazon River Basin, who depend on the waterways for food, clean water and as a mode of transport for people and goods.
Lima, a postdoctoral researcher at ICTA-UAB who studies the impacts of drought in the Amazon, explains that the severity we see now is due to a combination of El Niño and the overheating of the North Tropical Atlantic Ocean. The drought also leads to more forest fires, which increases cases of respiratory diseases due to smoke inhalation.
“Events like this in the past have produced a huge amount of greenhouse gas emissions,” Lima says, “and this in turn makes global warming even worse.”
