The single supplier model for mainframe-style network devices is breaking down through disaggregation. Until revently, the only choice for networking products was to buy a product bundle that included hardware, operating system, applications and support from a single vendor - the same model that IBM mainframes promoted and ultimately failed.
The process of disagreggation is common in business but not well recognised by networking professionals. I try to explain my understanding of what driving customers to move away from the "network mainframe" and what factors have changed the market to make competing with incumbent vendors like Cisco attractive.
Most importantly, you want disagreggation in your network because its better. Innovation is faster, product quality is better and there are choices to get support from companies that do it best.
