Signs of Fall are all around the National Zoo in Washington.
Flowers are losing their petals... The air is cooler...
And parents are dressing their little ones in warmer clothes. They're hoping that'll help keep the coughs and sniffles that usually come with the season at bay. But some say it's only a matter of time.
SOT- They get colds at day care pretty often. We take them to the doctor if we feel that's indicated but if not we treat them with things off the shelf.
Families won't be able to rely on over the counter cold treatments like Triaminic and Dimetapp much longer.
On Thursday, companies voluntarily started pulling medicines aimed at treating cold symptoms in children under 2 off the market.
This move comes just 1 week before Food and Drug Administration officials meet to discuss the fate of of those drugs. The F-D-A and other health groups say children have died from unintentional overdoses.
Some doctors say the reports of deaths and other information have made them doubt the medicines for some time.

The evidence was that really they didn't do anything to shorten the duration of disease or help with the symptoms. So, most of the faculty here and the drs. Have moved away from making recommendation that anyone take this and we actually discouraged it.
Dr. Beers says there are things parents can do instead of reaching for that cough syrup that's already in their medicine cabinets.
His top recommendations-- plenty of rest...
lots of liquids...
and time for the cold to go away.
