The NASEO Electricity Committee hosted a webinar on the U.S. Department of Energy’s Wind Energy Research Priorities. The U.S. Department of Energy Wind Energy Technology Office partners with the national laboratories, states, and the wind industry in advancing the development of off- and on-shore wind in the United States. Many of the technical advancements in scale, efficiency, and reduced costs and the programs that have been developed through this partnership have led to the dramatic expansion of wind energy in the United States. This growth, which now positions wind as the #1 source of renewable electric power, has spurred economic and environmental benefits across all 50 states. This webinar outlined DOE’s plans for future research programs in offshore, land-based, and distributed wind; in environmental and siting research; and for the integration of increasing amounts of wind power on the grid. The webinar also provided NASEO members with the opportunity to engage with DOE’s wind office to discuss states’ perspectives on wind research and development and future challenges and opportunities in supporting wind development.
