Are you #ready to take an unforgettable #journey to Greece?
Castles and picturesque medieval ports, #World #monuments and #Mediterranean #nostalgia, #relaxation and #delicious #cuisine!
#Napoli di #Romania, with reference to the lands of the #Byzantine Empire, is how the #Venetians used to call Nafplio during the late middle ages. It is a coastal city of the Peloponnese, built on the south-eastern edge of the fertile #Argolic plain, and is known for its very well-preserved old town which attracts a large number of #visitors all year round, its agricultural production consisting mainly of citrus #fruits (oranges, lemons, #tangerines.) and its port with a significant number of #sailing #boats.
Nafplio is considered as one of the most #romantic cities all over Greece, due its unique and special features, and was the #capital of the First #Hellenic #Republic and of the #Kingdom of Greece between 1823 and 1834.
Nafplio lies 138 km southwest of #Athens and only 12 km from #Argos, one of the #oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and the oldest in Europe. Nafplio has 14500 permanent #residents and it is the capital of the regional unit of #Argolis .
In #antiquity it used to serve as the #port of Argos, and is said to have derived its name from #Nauplius, the son of #Poseidon. The #Acronauplia walls date from pre-classical times. Subsequently, future occupations from Byzantines, #Franks, Venetians, and #Turks added to the #fortifications.
Every colourful #alley of Nafplio, every #church or Neoclassical #mansion has an exciting #story to share with you, a dream trail to discover this stunning #medieval old Town.
In the very heart of the city stands #Syntagma #Square where you can admire important historic buildings and monuments, like the #Archaeological museum, with artifacts from the Prehistoric and #Mycenaean Era, the Municipal #Gallery, two #Ottoman #mosques, once home to the first Greek #Parliament. Spend some quality time under the Greek sun, enjoying a cold #coffee or a yummy #italian style #ice-cream.
The well preserved mansions with the #Bougainvillea trees adorning their yards and balconies and the #aromas of this bright #Mediterranean corner will create part of your unforgettable #memories.
King #Otto was the #Bavarian first King of Greece. At #Kolokotronis square, stands the statue of this important #Hero, while at the surrounding municipal #park you get some rest before you admire the #lion of #Bavaria!
Stroll around the #promenade with the fancy #cafes and #restaurants. During the sunset continue your romantic walking around Nafplion #peninsula towards Arvanitia.
The view of #Bourtzi #Castle at the island accross is breathtaking. You can #visit it and travel back in time using the #tourist #caiques from the port. #Transit time 10’
#Acronafplia combines the glorious past with an unrestricted #view and modern tourist facilites!
The #Fortress of #Palamidi, overlooking the town. You can reach it either via a vehicle or by climbing #999 steps and succeeding in such a heroic achievement.
#Arvanitia beach is the nearest to Nafplio.
#Karathona, the most popular beach of the area.
#Tolo is a well-known summer resort with 1 km long sandy beach and turquoise waters.
4 km outside of Nafplio lies #Tiryns, an important Mycenaean centre, where the mythical hero #Hercules performed some of his Twelve #Labours.
Following in the footsteps of #mythology, #Mycenae transfers you to the land where the protagonists of the #Odyssey and the #Iliad ruled.
The world wide famous #theatre of #Epidaurus is considered to be the most perfect ancient #Greek theatre with regard to #acoustics and aesthetics, a #UNESCO World Heritage #monument.
