History:
Different opinions have arisen about the antiquity and history of Kanchi Sankaramadam. According to the official history of the monastery, Adi Shankara established the monastery and succeeded him as the 69th head of the monastery, dating back to the 5th century BC. In some other propaganda of the monastery it is said that Adi Shankara came to Kanchi and established the monastery called Sarvagna Peetam and died here. Other sources make it clear that Sankara's death took place in the Himalayas at Kedarnath.
Others say that the monastery was recently established in the 18th century as a branch of the Sringeri monastery in Kumbakonam and began to function independently. The abbots of Kumbakonam moved their monastery to Kanchi between 1842 and 1863 to take over the administration of the Kanchi Kamatchi temple. It is also said that this was the beginning of the Kanchi monastery.
According to the Kanchi monastery, the reason for the migration in the 18th century was the invasion of Aydar Ali. They also claim that the inscriptions in the temples around Kanchi are archeological evidence that Adi Shankara came and the monastery has a history of 2500 years. According to the monastery, the Sannidhi Kovil Street building in Kanchi was established many centuries ago but there are those who deny it.
Chandrasekara Saraswati Swami was the dean of the Kanchi Kamkodi Sankara monastery for many years.
