❄️Happy Winter Solstice ❄️
Wishing all my Chinese family and friends Happy Winter Solstice 冬至快乐。
On this day, we Malaysian Chinese will make this Chinese sweet dessert called Tang Yuan/汤圆, also known as Yuan Xiao/元宵 or Chinese glutinous rice balls that are made with glutinous rice flour and some are stuffed with sweet, semi-runny filling.
It’s always served warm in a sweetened liquid. The outer layer has a soft, gooey texture that resembles that of mochi but it also delivers a silky mouthfeel that tastes quite unique. The filling, such as black sesame paste, red bean paste, peanut filling, etc, stands out for its aromatic flavor and lava-like consistency.
Here’s an easy 30mins recipe of Plain Glutinous Rice Ball Soup.
Ingredients:
1️⃣Glutinous Rice Ball
Glutinous rice powder 200g
Warm water 160g-175g
Food colorings (I used red and green liquid food coloring)
2️⃣Sweet soup
2 liters of boiling water
3 pandan leaves
2-3 slices of ginger
Sugar or brown sugar according to your taste.
Instructions:
1️⃣In a large bowl, mix together the glutinous rice flour and warm water by slowly drizzling the warm water into the glutinous rice flour and stir with a spatula until all combined.
2️⃣Knead the dough into a soft, smooth and non-sticky dough. Please feel free to adjust its texture by adding more water if too hard or adding more flour if sticky. You can make these adjustments at any stage of the dough preparation. The dough is now ready to be rolled into small balls.
3️⃣I colored the dough with red and green food coloring beside the original glutinous rice flour which is whitish color. I split the dough into four smaller portions, added 1-2 drops of red and green food coloring into two smaller dough separately. Then i kneaded the doughs until the colors became even.
4️⃣Then roll out each colored dough ball(s) into a 1 inch thick log. Cut the log into 1 inch wide pieces. Roll each piece into a 1 inch wide ball. Coat with additional rice flour to prevent it from sticking or place them on parchment paper. (This is the standard size of the glutinous rice ball, however you can make them into smaller size or any shape you like. This is a good recipe to do with any young children. You can see some funny shaped glutinous rice balls in my shorts video, those were made by my 12 years old daughter 😊.)
5️⃣Boil 2 liters of water in a pot, once the water is boiling and bubbling, add in pandan leaves and ginger slices and boil for another 10mins.
6️⃣Add the balls into the boiling sweet soup. Once the balls float up in the soup, the glutinous rice balls soup dessert is ready to be served.
