Fashion designer Pierre Cardin has created a festival dedicated to theater and opera which takes place in the summer. But the presence of the great fashion designer does not make everyone happy, the controversy swells with the inhabitants of the village because Pierre Cardin has also bought around forty houses - a third of the village - some serve as showcases for exhibitions of works by art but mostly uninhabited. Pierre Cardin imprints his mark on Lacoste, he wants to make it a "Saint-Tropez of Culture". To the chagrin of some inhabitants, the deserted village is transformed into a museum, the shops close and only about ten inhabitants still live permanently in the old village.
Lacoste, the village of the Arts :
Plunging into the Luberon plain, the village of Lacoste offers a breathtaking panorama from the Luberon to Mont-Ventoux. At the turn of its steep and cobbled streets, the authentic charm of the perched villages of Provence emerges. Here, almost nothing has changed, no shop or restaurant steals the show from the stone houses and medieval heritage.
Located 16 kilometers from Apt, Lacoste is one of the Luberon hilltop villages. It faces the village of Bonnieux and offers a viewpoint to Mont Ventoux.
You will discover this medieval village rich with character by walking in its cobbled streets which go up and down in a bewitching labyrinth.
You will admire the church of St.Trophime dating from the 12th century and the 1550 belfry adorned with a wrought iron campanile.
Let yourself be charmed by a stroll in the heart of its ancient ramparts and stone houses.
The School of Arts Savannah College of Art and Design
Founded in 1970 by the American artist Bernard Pfriem, SCAD Lacoste, formerly known as the Lacoste School of Arts, organized its first session during the summer of 1971. It quickly acquired the reputation of being both a rigorous art school and an idyllic retreat from the distractions of everyday life – a quiet place to allow creative work and introspection in surroundings that offer wonderful natural light in a superb pastoral setting. It is located in an old building completely renovated in the valley below the village of Lacoste. Today, Lacoste's academic programs are managed by SCAD - Savannah College of Art and Design. Within its ancient walls, SCAD Lacoste offers various modern facilities. SCAD Lacoste students are fully immersed in the cobblestone
village and become part of a thriving arts center.
Lacoste, a village steeped in history
Its particular location made it both a cul-de-sac and an observation post for a long time, the importance of which asserted itself when Bonnieux, the neighboring town, became an enclave of the Count of Provence, at the beginning of the 16th century.
The site had been occupied by man from the end of prehistoric times and Neolithic remains have been found at a place called Baqui, on the plateau. It is necessary to wait for the beginning of the XI th century, that is to say the departure of the Barbarians who had put the country of Apt to fire and blood, driven out by the family of Saint-Mayeul, so that Costa, appears in the oldest texts we have. A named Eldebert is then lord of the place. The stronghold later became the possession of the Simiane family, who passed it on by marriage to the Berton de Crillon family in the 17th century. In the meantime, the religious wars bloodied the sector and, in 1545, the Catholic troops of Baron d'Oppède besieged Lacoste, where there was a strong Vaudois colony. Despite the bloody episodes of that time, a large Protestant community has survived until today.
