Bacterial vaginosis is associated with a fish like odor, while Trichomoniasis gives off a musty odor. The discharge is thin and off-white for Bacterial vaginosis, but pale green for Trichomoniasis. Bacterial Vaginosis does usually NOT cause with dysuria, tenderness or itchiness, while Trichomoniasis does. On examination, patients with Bacterial Vaginosis may have mild vulvar irritation, while a strawberry cervix may be present in those with Trichomoniasis. Clue cells are suggestive of Bacterial Vaginosis, while motile flagellated protozoa confirm Trichomoniasis. Partners of patients with Bacterial Vaginosis do not need to be treated, while partners of those with Trichomoniasis should be treated and screened for other STDs.
