In the highlands of Eastern Kenya, Meru, a farmer has abandoned the popular ware potato farming for an even more lucrative seed potato farming. Cecinta Nduru, at 49, is providing seed potato to farmers using the apical rooted cuttings technology.
Cuttings produce high numbers of quality seed tubers. The tubers produced from cuttings are clean and free of disease. Through this technology, Cecinta has helped the farmers in her area access clean seed saving them the long distances travelled to access good certified clean seed.
Through trainings received from the International Potato Center and Farm Inputs Promotion Africa, she is now a Village Based Advisor (VBA). She trains other farmers in her village on good agronomic practices as she sells the clean seed to them. Thanks to USAID's Feed the Future Accelerated Value Chain Development Program, many farmers are now accessing clean potato seed leading to better harvests.
