Cheddar Man is a male skeleton found in the Cheddar Gorge in Somerset, South West England. The skeleton dates to the Mesolithic period (c. 9100 BC, 7100 BC) and it appears that he died a violent death. A large pitted lesion above the skull's right eye socket suggests that the man may have also suffered from a bone infection. Through DNA technology, "Cheddar Man" has given scientists clues to the general appearance of Britain's earliest inhabitants.
