Different anesthesia/sedatives are used for different types of dental procedures! Such as…

🦷 local anesthesia: most commonly used for all fillings, crowns, etc. any procedure where you want to be “numb”
🦷 nitrous oxide (laughing gas): helps you feel relaxed if you’re anxious (fast-acting and quickly reversible meaning you can drive yourself home after). laughing gas would also be paired with local anesthetic.
🦷 oral sedation: mid-level sedation option that’s stronger than laughing gas but doesn’t involve IV sedation (so it’s pills or liquid meds). it will gradually make you feel sleepy or daydreamy, and it also doubles as an amnesic. you would need a driver to take you and pick you up from your appointment!
🦷 IV sedation (twilight): often used for wisdom tooth extractions, it’s a med that’s delivered through an IV line in your arm. would also need a DD to drive you :)
🦷 general anesthesia: less common in dental offices – however some offices may have a visiting anesthesiologist (for large cases like full mouth rehab) OR if you’re taking a child to the hospital to meet their pediatric dentist for a complex treatment case. would need a driver for this one too since this is truly “going under”!
