As the race for COVID–19 vaccines enters its next stage, we are faced with broad ethical challenges, along with specific questions of principle and practice.
How will the private companies developing these vaccines balance their commercial interests with the public good? Once the vaccines are ready for distribution, how should countries and the global community plan for distribution and allocation? And with so much skepticism about both commercial and political interests, what can and should be done to bolster trust across populations and targeted to specific communities?
Dr. Jeffrey Kahn, director of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, moderated a discussion on the ethics of the COVID-19 vaccines. Join us for this important discussion on a timely subject.
Ruth Faden is the founder of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics and its director from 1995 until 2016. She was the inaugural Andreas C. Dracopoulos Director (2014-2016) and currently is, and has been since 1995, the inaugural Philip Franklin Wagley Professor of Biomedical Ethics.
Nicole J. Hassoun is a professor in the Department of Philosophy at Binghamton University (SUNY). She is also co-director of the Institute for Justice and Well-Being, project head at the Global Health Impact Project, and was a visiting scholar at Cornell University (2017-2019).
Clive Meanwell is executive chair and founder of Population Health Partners, a global investment firm. He is also vice chairman of the board of directors of BB Biotech and a board member of EQRx. He previously founded The Medicines Company in 1996 and held a range of leadership positions including chairman, executive chairman, chief executive officer, and chief innovation officer.
Reed Tuckson is managing partner of Tuckson Health Connections. He has previously served as commissioner of public health for the District of Columbia, senior vice president for programs at the March of Dimes Foundation, president of the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, senior vice president for professional standards of the AMA, and executive vice president and chief of medical affairs for UnitedHealth Group.
Jeffrey Kahn is the Andreas C. Dracopoulos Director of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, a position he assumed in July 2016. From 2011, he has been the inaugural Robert Henry Levi and Ryda Hecht Levi Professor of Bioethics and Public Policy.
