ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands (Sept. 9, 2017) U.S. Navy Sailors assigned to amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1) and members of National Disaster Medical Assistance Team provide aid to evacuees as part of first response efforts to the U.S. Virgin Islands in the wake of Hurricane Irma. The Navy and Marine Corps team have conducted 47 medical evacuations from St. Thomas and St. John hospitals and delivered 17,500 lbs of food, water, and medical supplies to St. Thomas and St. John. The Department of Defense is supporting Federal Emergency Management Agency, the lead federal agency, in helping those affected by Hurricane Irma to minimize suffering and is one component of the overall whole-of-government response effort.
