Having originally made a tasting video for this vintage of Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc to celebrate International Sauvignon Blanc Day in 2020. David Allen, our Wine Director and Master of Wine inadvertently revisited the vintage in a second tasting about 18 months later. He seems to find this is still much the same iconic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
Cloudy Bay Vineyards is one of the most famous producers of the Marlborough wine region on the South Island of New Zealand. It was established in 1985 as one of the first producers of Marlborough and today, the flagship Sauvignon Blanc is one of the country's most sought-after wines.
The winery has mulitple vineyards in the Wairau Valley subregion of Marlborough, as well as an additional estate and cellar door in Central Otago. Marlborough has a strong maritime climate with some of the longest sunshine hours of anywhere in the country, ideal for ripening grapes with concentrated flavour compounds.
The estate was started in 1985 by David Hohnen, the founder of Cape Mentelle Vineyards in Western Australia's Margaret River region. Hohnen sold Cloudy Bay to Veuve Clicquot in 1990. In 2003, Veuve Clicquot was purchased by the multinational luxury group, LVMH.
Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc is one of the key wines that spawned the international success of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. It is famed for its complex, vibrant aromas, mouthwatering acidity and long finish. It has the ability to age for a decade but is rarely cellared by consumers.
Fruit comes from the Rapaura, renwick and Brancott Valley zones of the Wairau Valley. Each parcel ferments separately before blending in order to achieve consistent quality. Hence quantities can vary each year.
