The fortune cookie 🥠!
I have always been fascinated by this simple and fun treat, I think of the fortune cookie as an example of creativity. But in my mind this was always a Chinese invention 🤷🏼‍♂️ yet it’s not!!

To my surprise and probably to yours as well, the fortune cookie is not Chinese! it was actually invented in the USA 🇺🇸 by a Japanese 🇯🇵 immigrant called Makoto Hagiwara in San Francisco. Makoto Hagiwara was a landscape architect who worked at the Japanese Tea Garden in the Golden Gate Park. He used to serve Tsujiura Senbei to the clients, and he is the one who decided to change the recipe to make it more appealing for the American audience.

Even though to give credit where it’s due, I have to say that Chinese restaurants are the ones that popularized it all over the United States, Canada and many places around the world
