India has dropped 10 places to be ranked 51st of 167 independent territories in the Democracy Index 2019 - a list of the most democratic countries in the world. India's overall score fell from 7.23 in 2018 to 6.90 in the 2019 Democracy Index published by - the Economist, a news and general affairs publication. With apprehension over the "discriminatory Citizenship (Amendment) Act", the situation in Kashmir and the controversial NRC (national register of citizens) , The Economist cited "democratic regression (in) erosion of civil liberties" as a major reason for a lower ranking this year. This is India's lowest ranking since the index was first published in 2006.
