There must have been some magic mixed in the water off Pompano Beach. How else do you explain 22 sailfish being caught and released in the shortened one-day Extreme Kayak Fishing Tournament Sailfish Smackdown? For the kayak anglers who braved the elements, they got the ultimate reward by experiencing fishing utopia with monster sailfish being caught in 70 to 250 feet of water off the Pompano Beach coastline.
Rob Rodriguez made history by catching four sailfish in one day to earn $5,000 from YakGear & Turbo USA as well as the Global Fishmounts sailfish trophy. Stephen Klein captured second place by snagging two sailfish at once (9:33 a.m. and 9:40 a.m.) to earn the $2,000 prize from Nautical Ventures Marine Center. Coming right behind him was Christian Childs bringing in two sails (9:55 a.m. and 10:57 a.m.) to win $1,000 from Dodge Ram and SA Company. Shaun Roles, the 2019 EKFT Summer Slam champion, brought in two sails (9:02 a.m. and 11:28 a.m.) for fourth place to earn $500 from Nautical Ventures Marine Center.
On any other occasion, Justin Richey’s two sailfish catch (10:04 a.m. and 11:40 a.m.) that earned him $250 would have put him in contention for the top prize. He came in fifth place. John Venarchick took sixth place (8:40 a.m.). Jared Schuster won $600 for the Kingfish Calcutta.
