The United States has been involved in a seemingly endless conflict in Afghanistan since 2001. After their invasion, they quickly toppled the Taliban government and forced the al-Qaeda terrorists they were harbouring into hiding. However, despite this, two decades of nation building and attempting to install democratic leaders have all but failed. The Taliban look like they will topple the government in Kabul, which they have presented as an illegitimate, imperial project installed by a foreign intervention.
The opium trade, corruption, and the rise of China have all played a part in the end of this seemingly endless war. President Joe Biden has pursued the US-Taliban peace deal achieved by the Trump administration. But by leaving the US risks allowing the Taliban to return to power and rollback human rights won with blood and treasure.
