This year’s theme, Acceleration of the African Continental Free Trade
Area Implementation, was adopted by the AU at last week’s 36th
ordinary session of the union's assembly. It's believed the theme will
lift 30 million people out of extreme poverty and 68 million people
from moderate poverty.

This comes at a time when almost 20% of Africa’s population faces
chronic hunger and much of its young citizenry remains unemployed.
