Is it worth visiting Aqaba? When visiting Jordan this is the question you should ask yourself before planning to visit Aqaba. While Aqaba carries the relaxed small-town atmosphere it also packs a wide array of international food chains that make it seem the least authentic city in Jordan. The town offers a stopover en route to other parts of Jordan and is ideal to soak up some sun, swim, dive and do some snorkelling.
The winter temperature in Aqaba rarely goes below 20C so it is a perfect getaway from Europe to warm up a bit. However, Aqaba isn't overburdened with sights of its own and most people come here only to relax at the beach and eat out at night. The city is a low tax, duty free Zone, which means it is much cheaper than the rest of Jordan and an excellent place to splurge on food and drinks.
Personally, I didn't particularly enjoy the vibe in Aqaba, as it felt very touristy and very far from the authenticity I found in other parts of Jordan. Although, I have to mention that I ended up in Aqaba after spending a few days in the Wadi Rum desert... After that amazing experience any place in the world would have felt inauthentic!
