“China is willing to make efforts with Russia to assume the role of great powers, and play a guiding role to inject stability and positive energy into a world rocked by social turmoil,” Chinese President Xi Jinping told Vladimir Putin during a leaders’ summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Samarkand during their first in-person talks since the start of the Ukraine conflict. Meanwhile Putin blasted attempts to create a “unipolar world” and praised China’s “balanced” approach to Ukraine. “We understand your concerns,” Putin said, without specifying what issues China may have raised about Ukraine.
