It's the London of 1921. The First World War and the subsequent flu epidemic have left untold thousands bereaved. And many of these people are vulnerable to cruel con artists who pretend to be in contact with the 'afterlife'.

Florence Cathcart (Rebecca Hall) has made it her mission to expose such fraudsters. Matron Maud Hill (Imelda Staunton) and teacher Robert Mallory (Dominic West) ask Florence to investigate the sighting of a ghost prior to a mysterious death at their remote boarding school. Florence arrives with all the scientific paraphernalia of her debunker's trade -- but then she witnesses something that challenges all her assumptions.

Written by Stephen Volk, who created ITV's spooky 'Afterlife' series and the BBC's notorious 'Ghostwatch', 'The Awakening' is a spine-tingling ghost story that relies on atmosphere rather than effects and cheap shocks for its creeping sense of supernatural menace.
