Britain's Prime Minister Tony Blair has congratulated Gerhard Schroeder, Germany's next Chancellor, on his defeat of Helmut Kohl who had been in power for 16 years.
Blair also paid tribute to Kohl for his pro-European outlook during his four terms.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"It's a tremendous result for Gerhard Schroeder, it's a great personal triumph for him and I know him well. It's a tremendous thing that we will now have centre-left governments in France and Germany and Great Britain. And I look forward to working with him very closely indeed, it's a new era that is opening up. I would pay tribute to Helmut Kohl for his place in history, for all the things he has done for Germany and for Europe. Obviously I am looking very much forward to working with Gerhard Schroeder as a colleague."
