Justin Trudeau will serve a third term as Prime Minister after the Liberal party captured a minority government in the 2021 federal election.
Trudeau had hoped the election would result in a majority government but the Liberals fell short of the 170 seats needed to make that happen.
An official result will not be announced until nearly 800,000 mail-in ballots are counted. Elections Canada says that process will begin Tuesday.
The Liberal party was hovering between 155 and 157 seats early Tuesday morning.
The Conservatives were sitting with roughly 120 seats. They will remain the official opposition with leader Erin O'Toole at the helm.
O'Toole has been re-elected in the Ontario riding of Durham. He delivered a speech in Oshawa and called on Conservatives not to waiver from the party's commitment to grow and earn the trust of more voters.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has won re-election in his riding of Burnaby-South in British Columbia. Singh said Canadians can count on his New Democrats to continue fighting to help people weather the COVID-19 pandemic under a re-elected Liberal minority government.
Green Party Leader Annamie Paul lost in the Ontario riding of Toronto Centre.
Locally, many ridings had clear winners while others will have to wait until all ballots are counted.
