STORYLINE
Protesters in Hong Kong gathered outside the Pakistani Consulate on Thursday to demand the end of the state of emergency in Pakistan.
The demonstration, led by the human rights group The International League of People's Struggle (ILPS-HK) condemned the arrest of oppositionists and the declaration of martial law by President General Pervez Musharraf.
Holding various placards reading, "End General Musharraf's Military Rule in Pakistan" and "No Military Rule", they shouted "go Musharraf go", and called for the "release all political prisoners."
Protesters also denounced the support of the United States to Musharraf's government and challenged the US to fully withdraw its support.
Musharraf said that he expects to quit as chief of Pakistan's army by the end of November, heralding a return to civilian rule, but he rejected US pressure to quickly end a state of emergency.
In an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday, Musharraf also rejected a demand from opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, under house arrest in the eastern city of Lahore, that he leave the political stage altogether.
